FAMILY HOUSE OPENS WITH INAUGURAL EVENT AT SANKT AUGUSTIN

  |   News

The constructions for the family house in Sankt Augustin are completed – on November 21 the charity organization McDonald’s Kinderhilfe will open the doors for all interested visitor to take a look at the building designed by GRAFT.

The house will provide space for families with hospitalized children who are in the process of receiving medical treatment.
The house, a dynamic bended structure, finds its resting position on top of a small hill amongst the topographically interesting surroundings. In the ground floor, a long table centrally located in the public area serves as community space for the entire house. It is here that parents find the opportunity to engage in conversation with each other while preparing meals together, thus creating a reciprocal sense of support and understanding.

This center also has an elongated interactive ramp. This ramp has many community uses, such as a landscape with spaces for sitting and lying, a playground for children, a performance stage, and quieter working areas for parents.
It also connects to a large outdoor terrace. The extraordinary building structure is not just a space for rest and social interaction but also a positive and hopeful landmark.

INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2014

  |   News

The Autostadt Roof and Service was a winner at the International Architecture Awards.

GRAFT was commissioned to create a quiet area where the buyer of a new car could get familiar with all the functions in an almost private atmosphere. The space had to be protected from rain and direct sunlight, while allowing enough daylight to avoid the usage of energetically expensive and unnecessary artificial light.

GRAFT developed the idea of a horizontal leaf that protects the landscape underneath with its organic form. “WES-Landschaftsarchitektur” planned the landscape surrounding the roof. In the architectural application of this image, it was necessary to produce the greatest possible lightness: A special static principle allows for the unique roof structure to be anchored in just two points. It lays in the landscape and defines a clear and protected room. The planning of the structural framework was done by “Schlaich Bergmann und Partner”.

HONORABLE MENTION FOR THE PROJECT ‘LOFT HAUSVOGTEIPLATZ’ AT THE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS 2014

  |   News

The interior design of this Berlin loft is mainly characterized by the dynamic lines of the open, bright space and the shape of the customized dark cubes.

Intimate and serving features, such as bathrooms, the dressing room and the kitchen, are situated inside of and around the cubes. Due to their wooden surfaces, the cubes seem like pieces of furniture – the traditional fragmentation of spaces trough dividing walls become obsolete.

The axes of the loggias towards the square in front of the building form the starting point for the dynamics of the flowing interior. In order to visually support the sharp lines of the cubes, all paintings or power outlets were integrated into the walls of the cubes.

The staircase from the loft to the upper floor/ roof terrace is decorated with an individual and personal ceiling mural.

THIS IS MODERN: GERMAN WERKBUND EXHIBITION VENEDIG 2014

  |   News

On the occasion of the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice and the one hundred year anniversary of the Werkbund exhibition in cologne in 1914 the German Werkbund Berlin presents an exhibition on the position of contemporary architecture and design in Germany:

22 German architects who are present in the public perception demonstrate their different positioning and opinions regarding a design task, the latter being the examination of the German pavilion in Venice, whose demolition was called for by the president of the federal chamber of architects a few years ago.

The building has now been designated as dilapidated and the architects were given the possibility of a new building on the same site. 22 different approaches in plans, sketches and models give the viewer the possibility of comparison and evaluation. By hosting this event the German Werkbund Berlin wants to fulfill his obligation to the critical dialogue between divergent attitudes and professional groups as well as illustrate its cultural aspect and standard.
