GRAFT goes Science, Article Paramtric Spatial Design

“GRAFT GOES SCIENCE”

  |   News

In cooperation with the hospital Charité Berlin, GRAFT released an article about noise reduction in intensive care units (ICU) that describes the measurable benefits of a reduced noise environment.

The paper was published by IPEM (Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) in Psychological Measurements (IOPsience).

Together with the partners from Charité Berlin, GRAFT founding partners Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz, and Thomas Willemeit, developed a parametric spatial design to reduce detectable stress-inducing factors such as noise, light, disorientation and the lack of privacy, the design was supposed to enable a measurable improvement of the healing process and therefore a significant reduction of the occurrence of delirium and cognitive long-term damages.

The interior concept creates a homely atmosphere through its soft and flowing forms, the use of large surfaces and dark wood floor, indirect light and individually controllable lighting systems. Technical equipment and supply lines were arranged to suit the workflows and still disappear visually from the patient’s perception.

Heimat2 at Architecture Biennale in Venice

HEIMAT2 AT GERMAN PAVILION AT THE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE

  |   News

The concept for Heimat2 that GRAFT developed with further project partners is now part of the exhibition “Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country” in the German Pavilion at this years’ Biennale di Architettura in Venice.

Heimat2 is presented along with all projects that took part in the Berlin Award 2016 this spring. The German Senate Department for Urban Development and Environment in cooperation with the German Architecture Museum (Deutsches Architekturmuseum) called for entries this year under the motto “Heimat in der Fremde” (home in foreign land) and therefore honored innovative projects that present an accommodation for refugees, as well as improvements in life quality, and the connectedness into the urban development.

The project Heimat2 does not have the claim to just build dwelling places, but to create quality residential villages that are architecturally appealing and socially integrative. The first building will be realized in 2016 in Berlin. Heimat2 is also working on other solutions on an international level.

GRAFT DESIGNS URBAN NATION MUSEUM IN BERLIN

  |   News

Since May 19th, another GRAFT project is ready for construction: the Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art (UN Museum) in Berlin Schöneberg. The start of the project was officially announced in the presence of GRAFT founding partner Thomas Willemeit, Secretary of Cultural Affairs Tim Renner, the director of the UN museum Yasha Young and the project initiators Markus Terboven (Gewobag) and Hendrik Jellema (Berliner Leben Foundation). After the completion in summer 2017, the museum will be a globally unique address for exhibitions, research, and exchange for urban art.

The architectural concept by GRAFT transforms the former residential building into a spectacular museum space. The building and its modular changeable facades will be a piece of art itself. The interior space spans across two floors and therefore creates unexpected space proportions, width, and height. Up to 7 meters high pieces can then be presented inside the museum. A gallery that crosses the museum like a high line enables the visitors to get a closer look at the artworks.

Urban Nation is an initiative of the Berliner Leben Foundation, which was founded in 2013 by the Berlin housing association Gewobag. The museum concept by Yasha Young will present urban street art in a new light and as an integral part of the city under the motto “Connect. Create. Care.”.

SOLARKIOSK BRINGS INTERNET AND POWER TO SCHOOLS IN ZAATARI REFUGEE CAMP

  |   News

SOLARKIOSK and the satellite operator SES are pioneering the first-of-its-kind “Connected Solar School” to deliver electricity, educational tools, and broadband internet connectivity to schools run by UNICEF and Relief International within the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.

Bringing together solar energy provided by the SOLARKIOSK’s E-HUBB and a broadband connectivity enabled by the SES’s AstraConnect broadband platform, the “Connected Solar School” will make it possible for teachers to use quality e-learning materials. The E-HUBB interior will become the administrative centre for teachers and will have a power node to charge solar lamps, laptops, printers, mobile phones, and tablets.

The Zaatari refugee camp currently houses more than 80,000 refugees and more than 300 students are attending four schools in the camp which are operated by UNICEF and Relief International.

To date, the SOLARKIOSK was erected in 10 countries, with 107 units, and impacted more than 800.000 people. The refugee camp school is one more possibility to help and make a change.

START OF CONSTRUCTION FOR ICE STADIUM SCHIERKE

  |   News

On Wednesday, May 18th 2016, the rebuilding of ice stadium Schierke officially started.

In 2013 GRAFT convinced the jury of the European architectural competition with the draft of a filigree roof made of glass fiber membrane and won the competition for renovating the stadium. The 2.400 m² large roof spans across the stadium with natural elegance and lightness and anchors on only two points. GRAFT developed the roof structure in collaboration with schlaich bergermann partner. It protects the space from rain, snow, and the sun, at the same time it offers a view towards the mountainside of the Harz and the sky above.

The stadium is one of the oldest natural ice stadiums in Germany and will now be reactivated. The new sports and leisure space in the Harz mountain range will be finished by December 1st 2017 and will then offer space for up to 4.900 visitors for a wide range of sports and events throughout the year.
