Architecture in Times of Need is the first book to document the projects and progress made by the Make It Right Foundation, established by actor Brad Pitt during the redevelopment of New Orleans’ vibrant Lower Ninth Ward which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

This book documents the process with numerous photos, plans, and renderings as well as written commentary from the architects. Besides Brad Pitt’s foreword in which he writes of his motivations to bring the Make It Right Foundation to life, the book also includes essays regarding the entire design process and the cradle-to-cradle concept. In addition, the ‘Pink Project’, a Land Art awareness installation from Brad Pitt and GRAFT, generated interest in the international media thereby helping to attract financing for the MIR housing project. This book can also serve as an instruction manual for people and other initiatives confronted with similar circumstances. MIR is currently working to extend their aid programs to other areas in need across the USA.

Instigated by MIR and its founders Brad Pitt, GRAFT, Bill McDonough, and Cherokee, a group of high-profile and influential international architects including David Adjaye, GRAFT, Gehry, MVRDV, Morphosis and Shigeru Ban were engaged to develop affordable house typologies for low income residents incorporating the latest in sustainable construction and design.
