Project type: Urban Planning

Location: Schierke, Oberharz, Germany

Time: 2013

Status: Competition

In the competition for a multi-functional ice stadium, GRAFT created a light and elegant roof structure. Through its organic form the roof protects the area underneath from rain and snow and still offers a spectacular view into the Harz, the highest mountain range in Northern Germany.

A special static principle allows for the unique roof structure to be anchored in just two points. It lays in the landscape and defines a clear and protected space. The stadium is oriented along the topography of the valley and opens towards north and south. It also frames the old competition tower and the terraces made from natural stone. The amorphous geometry of the roof structure forms an evident bridge between top and bottom, between sky and landscape.
