During the international interiors show imm cologne (January 19-25, 2015) OBJECT CARPET presented their interactive rug configurator “RUGX-Konfigurator”. The tool allows clients to test individual and customized solutions in different spatial situations. In order for customers to get realistic impressions OBJECT CARPET commissioned GRAFT to create interior visualizations for hotels and retail.
On Friday, January 30, GRAFT hosted the 5th Partner Day of the Association of German Architects „BDA“ in their Berlin studio. The program of the event evolved around “Responsibility in Architecure”: GRAFT founding partner Thomas Willemeit gave a lecture on the subjects of “Community Commuters” and the mega trend “Health”.
In the white city of Old Belgrade, near the banks of the Sava River, GRAFT transformed the historic building of the “Old Mill” into a 4 Star hotel. On January 28 the “Radisson Blu Old Mill” opens with a big media event!
The overall concept of re-contextualization fuses the local heritage and the contemporary interior design into a singular whole: through grafting between old and new, the spirit of the Old Mill lives on in modern attire and becomes a new local landmark.
We are happy to announce that our Berlin project „Holzmarkt Eckwerk“ is one two German projects nominated for MIPIM Award 2015 in the category “Best Futura Project!”
The design was developed in an open dialogue between the architecture firms GRAFT and Kleihues + Kleihues, together with the GuK (Genossenschaft für urbane Kreativität). Eckwerk is an exemplary building complex that aims to respond to the social, economic and ecological questions of our time.
The main idea is to create an inspiring and lively space that enables relations between working and living, public sphere and privacy.
The viaduct is conceived as a multi-storey market place with five individual towers. Those towers are connected by the Berg Pfad, an architectural mountain trail. Below you can find the links to all the nominees as well as an article from the newspaper “Immobilienzeitung”.
From January 1 until February 14 the gallery “Architekturgalerie München” will show the GRAFT design for the new youth hostel in Munich under the title “DJH Präsentation”. The exhibition explores how the new design strategy of the Bavarian Hostelling Organization (DJH Bayern) connects tradition and modernity.

The prize for the structural engineering category went to Mike Schlaich of Schlaich Bergermann & Partner from Berlin, who was recognised for his contribution to the roofing of the Wolfsburg Customer Centre. As is well known, the draft was produced by GRAFT, and the jury explicitly praised the close working relationship between the two offices. The structure’s “geometry virtually lacking in bending moments” enables a lightness that is at once both true and without ostentation in its design.
Lars Krückeberg was invited to present the Solarkiosk project at the prestigious Powering Africa Conference, which took place in the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba on November 21 2014.
The 3rd Annual Powering Africa conference is a concentrated two-day meeting set to bring together senior level executives to drive forward investment in the African energy sector. The conference included speakers from organizations such as USAID, FMO, and IFC while focusing on power interconnections and alternative energy developments.
The constructions for the family house in Sankt Augustin are completed – on November 21 the charity organization McDonald’s Kinderhilfe will open the doors for all interested visitor to take a look at the building designed by GRAFT.
The house will provide space for families with hospitalized children who are in the process of receiving medical treatment.
The house, a dynamic bended structure, finds its resting position on top of a small hill amongst the topographically interesting surroundings. In the ground floor, a long table centrally located in the public area serves as community space for the entire house. It is here that parents find the opportunity to engage in conversation with each other while preparing meals together, thus creating a reciprocal sense of support and understanding.
This center also has an elongated interactive ramp. This ramp has many community uses, such as a landscape with spaces for sitting and lying, a playground for children, a performance stage, and quieter working areas for parents.
It also connects to a large outdoor terrace. The extraordinary building structure is not just a space for rest and social interaction but also a positive and hopeful landmark.

Young Architects from Germany
The Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) present an exhibition of fourteen projects by young architects from Germany that have been completed abroad mainly since 2004. GRAFT have been working on the project MAKE IT RIGHT (MIR) by reconstructing a quarter of New Orleans left badly damaged after Hurricane Katrina.
We are very happy to announce that our SOLARKIOSK project won an award at the prestigious Bundesdesignpreis in the category product design.
33 entries were nominated for the highest official design prize of the German Federal Republic. The award ceremony took place yesterday at the ministry of economics.
GRAFT was asked by the German institute, ZUKUNFTSINSTITUT, to research living spaces.
How should public, commercial and private spaces be designed in the future to shape our quality of living?
The publication “Real Estate Report 2015” focuses on the trending topics about our built world. It´s a “must-read” for all planners and producers of spaces, from the real estate and construction sector, architects, product designers and retailers, to private builders and representatives of the mobility industry.
o From Hospital to Hospitality
o Community Commuters
o New Relevance
o Living Spaces
The Autostadt Roof and Service was a winner at the International Architecture Awards.
GRAFT was commissioned to create a quiet area where the buyer of a new car could get familiar with all the functions in an almost private atmosphere. The space had to be protected from rain and direct sunlight, while allowing enough daylight to avoid the usage of energetically expensive and unnecessary artificial light.
GRAFT developed the idea of a horizontal leaf that protects the landscape underneath with its organic form. “WES-Landschaftsarchitektur” planned the landscape surrounding the roof. In the architectural application of this image, it was necessary to produce the greatest possible lightness: A special static principle allows for the unique roof structure to be anchored in just two points. It lays in the landscape and defines a clear and protected room. The planning of the structural framework was done by “Schlaich Bergmann und Partner”.
Between the city centers of Berlin and Potsdam, three future-forward „Plus-Energy-Houses“ are currently under construction in the quiet neighborhood of the former Don Bosco residential area. The buildings, situated close to the lake “Großer Wannsee” and right nearby the forest “Forst Düppel” are famous for innovative sustainability concepts. The Plus-Energy-House are of a unique kind in Germany, offering the possibility to lease an electric vehicle (EV) as an addition to the rental agreement and thereby use excess energy of the house for electric mobility. The Facades of houses in Berlin-Wannsee are almost finished! Now the grounds of the energy efficient buildings can be designed which will be ready for rent at 1. November .
Save the date:
Tomorrow CONTEMPORARY FOODLAB, GRAFT and SOLARKIOSK will start a temporary project on the GRAFT site at Invalidenstr/Ackerstr in Berlin Mitte!

between 12 pm and 10 pm. There is also a SOLARKIOSK on display providing Little Wood with energy, light and music!
The interior design of this Berlin loft is mainly characterized by the dynamic lines of the open, bright space and the shape of the customized dark cubes.
Intimate and serving features, such as bathrooms, the dressing room and the kitchen, are situated inside of and around the cubes. Due to their wooden surfaces, the cubes seem like pieces of furniture – the traditional fragmentation of spaces trough dividing walls become obsolete.
The axes of the loggias towards the square in front of the building form the starting point for the dynamics of the flowing interior. In order to visually support the sharp lines of the cubes, all paintings or power outlets were integrated into the walls of the cubes.
The staircase from the loft to the upper floor/ roof terrace is decorated with an individual and personal ceiling mural.
On the occasion of the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice and the one hundred year anniversary of the Werkbund exhibition in cologne in 1914 the German Werkbund Berlin presents an exhibition on the position of contemporary architecture and design in Germany:
22 German architects who are present in the public perception demonstrate their different positioning and opinions regarding a design task, the latter being the examination of the German pavilion in Venice, whose demolition was called for by the president of the federal chamber of architects a few years ago.
The building has now been designated as dilapidated and the architects were given the possibility of a new building on the same site. 22 different approaches in plans, sketches and models give the viewer the possibility of comparison and evaluation. By hosting this event the German Werkbund Berlin wants to fulfill his obligation to the critical dialogue between divergent attitudes and professional groups as well as illustrate its cultural aspect and standard.
GRAFT and ten other architectural companies present their designs and projects in various exhibition concepts on “Topographic Structure” at the premises of the Palazzo Bolano.
The presentation of the projects takes place at the following events:
06.06. PECHA KUCHA NIGHT
07.06. ALPITECTURE & FRIENDS
Fear of dying, stress, disorientation – people who know intensive care units divine the innovations incorporated in this exemplary intensive care unit. The analysis of details, material, shape, and colour is particularly impressive as it is able to use the architectural design to generate a “soothing spatial world” – in an existing building. The project could thus also give an impulse for the modification and conversion of many intensive care units, which have not yet realised this effect of architecture and its significance for the patients.
With the aim to select the worldwide best projects in the field of architecture and interiors, the project “Parametrische (T)Raumgestaltung” received a Special Mention prize at the AIT Award 2014.
Thomas Willemeit will give a lecture and support the book presentation “Healing Architecture” in Berlin.
You are very welcome to attend the event!
