GRAFT Kanera Sinks- Revolutionizing a Spatial Concept Ever since the late 19th century – in other words ever since private bathrooms have existed – washbasins have tended to be wall-mounted or positioned next to a wall. Now the washbasin can be moved to the centre of the bathroom. In this respect, the KANERA 1 D double washbasin presents a revolutionary spatial concept: for the first time, a double washbasin has been designed as a standalone installation within the bathroom. It not only offers the shared experience of the poetry of water, but also enables completely new room layouts.

Ever since the late 19th century – in other words ever since private bathrooms have existed – washbasins have tended to be wall-mounted or positioned next to a wall. In this respect, the KANERA 1 D double washbasin presents a revolutionary spatial concept: for the first time, a double washbasin has been designed as a standalone installation within the bathroom. It not only offers the shared experience of the poetry of water, but also enables completely new room layouts.

Kanera Sinks

It makes an inspiring statement, and in doing so sets the stage for architects and designers to develop new bathroom interiors that reflect their clients’ wishes, freeing up the positioning of bathtub, shower, washstand solutions and furniture modules and making it possible to orchestrate the experience of water as an element.

The 1.6 × 1.2 m KANERA 1 D is compatible with a wide range of base furniture units, and the range of options for the configuration of the washbasin, materials and functions is almost limitless. GRAFT’s design for the double washbasin made of enamelled steel creates a ‘washing place’ that can form the heart of a room, turning the bathroom into a haven, a reflection of the owner’s personality, while simultaneously exerting a powerful fascination as an art object.

KANERA 1E

A sink like KANERA 1 E, having won the renowned red dot award: product design 2008, awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen on March, 14th is the pinnacle of industrial design. Firstly, it has to “function” and secondly, it has to have “form”, -a form that packages the function in a way that awakens desire. This sensual play requires the highest level of qualifications in each phase of the developing process in order to continually evoke new emotions and enduringly supersede expectations. This way, the impulsive design of the KANERA 1 E matured in a one year long, inspiring interplay of emotion and efficiency, of creativity and do-ability and last but not least man and material.

GRAFT was commissioned by KANERA to develop a sink in the traditional technique implementing enameled embossed sheet metal. In the design of this model GRAFT explores the material’s properties, creating a fixture as topographically integrated piece rather than a freestanding entity. The new basin is a landscape where water levels differentiate the shore line, where toothbrush and soap find natural resting places, where the very nature of water’s ever-moving fluidity has its formal expression: a pastoral design connecting the human body to a natural flow within a bigger context, throughout the staging of our small daily routines.
