As part of the exhibition "immer modern! Berlin and its streets", GRAFT was invited to design a vision for one of Berlin's major streets.
The developed proposal follows a positive vision of the future, transforming the car-centered plans of the last century into an urban space with a new quality of living. Because residential areas and impassable roads do not go together.
The main element of the design is a spacious park on “Platz der Vereinten Nationen” with large water features continuing into Mollstrasse, which is made possible by reducing the traffic areas. The existing open spaces in the north will be extended to create a park that stretches into the adjacent neighborhoods. After the idea of housing surrounded by nature was increasingly restricted in favor of the car-friendly city in the 1960s and 1970s, it has now become possible to dream of such a living standard again, by gradually reducing car traffic in urban areas.
Additions on a new scale allow for numerous green roof areas. For the existing prefabricated buildings, more small-scale elements, green loggia façades and private roof gardens are proposed. The two lower storeys of the prefabricated buildings will be broken up and supplemented with retail, workshop space and small offices to create a mixed and lively inner-city quarter with a high quality of greenery.
The present proposal for Mollstrasse demonstrates GRAFTs idea of a liveable sponge city for people and animals.
