UNBUILDING WALLS at the conference „Former European Border and the Green Belt. Networks and Opportunities of Cooperation in a European Border Area”

On Sunday, June 17th 2018, the conference „Former European border and the green belt. Networks and opportunities of cooperation in a European border area” takes place at the visitor center of the Berlin Wall Memorial.

GRAFT founding partner Thomas Willemeit and Marianne Birthler, who are among the curators of the German pavilion at this year’s architectural exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, will give a lecture about the exhibition “Unbuilding Walls”.

“Unbuilding Walls” explores the effects of division and the process of healing as a dynamic spatial phenomenon and focuses on architectural projects in the former death strip. Among them is the Berlin Wall Memorial, which counts to the few places, where the original structures are mostly preserved.

The conference is organized by the German National Committee of ICOMOS e.V., IUCN, the Berlin Wall foundation, the Landesdenkmalamt Berlin, the BUND, the state office of Brandenburg for preservation of monuments and the archaeological state museum.
