GRAFT is designing a new, high-profile showroom for C. Bechstein’s main production site, which can also be transformed into a concert hall thanks to mobile, multifunctional spatial elements.
In Seifhennersdorf, Saxony, lies the company’s main site for the production of its world-famous grand and upright pianos. The existing factory building is currently being expanded to increase production capacity and to create improved opportunities for presenting the instruments.
GRAFT was brought into the planning process to emphasize the architectural connection to the planned Carl Bechstein Campus in Berlin, thereby creating a consistent built identity for the C. Bechstein brand.
The new five-story extension is being designed by a local architecture firm and draws on the existing factory for its architectural language. In close collaboration with the local planners, GRAFT is designing a representative forecourt and integrating a foyer, an improved circulation system, and a two-story hall for the presentation of the instruments into the new building.
This space is dedicated to sensory experience, exuding the same elegance and strength as the high-quality instruments displayed within. The hall supports a range of acoustic atmospheres, allowing prospective buyers to experience the instruments in their full depth.
With the help of mobile walls, it can also be transformed into a fully functional concert hall, finely tuned to the sound of the piano.
In the vicinity of Hans Scharoun’s Villa Schminke, this project establishes a distinct architectural expression for C. Bechstein.
The manufactory in Seifhennersdorf builds on the region’s centuries-old tradition of woodworking and the craftsmanship of high-quality musical instruments. With this project, C. Bechstein is making a long-term commitment to Seifhennersdorf as a location and strengthening the company’s visibility within the region.
