WIEWEIL creates space for a contemporary blend of work and living – and above all, for exchange. As an urban hub between the districts of Mitte, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain, the complex offers versatile spaces for projects, initiatives, organizations, and businesses of all kinds. At the same time, WIEWEIL provides housing for 250 people, whether in apartments, shared flats, or cluster apartments. The firms Kleihues+Kleihues and GRAFT are collaborating on the project as a joint venture.

The design creates a unique location on the Spree River in what is currently an inhospitable spot, forming an alleyway and elevated levels, making the space a new experience, and offering new perspectives. A two-story base forms the robust foundation of the complex and provides access to the entire building. Above it open the "city balcony" and the "city garden" – two partially publicly accessible open spaces with expansive views across the elevated railway to the Spree and Kreuzberg. Three high-rise towers frame these levels and give WIEWEIL its striking, highly visible silhouette.

Facing Holzmarktstraße, a street-facing wing rises from the base, shielding the building on one side and oriented towards the Spree River on the other with continuous, terraced balconies. A high-ceilinged entrance hall, which opens onto the base, defines the street-facing facade. Here, generous, flexibly usable spaces are created on two levels: for restaurants, exhibitions, showrooms, conferences, workshops, sports, or informal formats in between. Spacious forums and shared spaces in the base promote efficient use of space and offer ideal conditions for diverse formats – open, adaptable, and deliberately undefined. Between the WIEWEIL building and the light rail viaduct, an alleyway is created, forming a sheltered outdoor space and an atmospheric counterpoint to the surrounding traffic arteries.

The deliberate juxtaposition of living and working environments is a central theme of the building's concept. WIEWEIL sees itself as a vibrant network of shared spaces, collaborative areas, retreats, and open platforms for exchange. Its offerings are aimed not only at the people who live and work here, but also at guests, neighbors, and the wider public. Public access to the plinth and the permanent accessibility of the urban balcony and open spaces are legally guaranteed – a commitment WIEWEIL makes to the city.

The innovative interlocking of living and working worlds plays a decisive role in the usage concept of a growing residential and knowledge landscape. WIEWEIL offers venues for events and lectures, spaces for collaboration and diverse forms of working as well as communal living, especially in the form of cluster living for students and trainees who benefit from the immediate proximity to places of learning, research, work or training.
